Leghorn

Livorno is born as a small fishermen’s village, located on the Ligurian sea coast and placed in a natural bay, a few miles south from the mouth of the river Arno and from Pisa. The place name is first to be found in 904 a.D., described as Livorna, and it probably derives from the name of a roman person of etruscan origin ( Liburnius, Leburnius, Leburna). Other thesis see a derivation from the latin ‘liburna’ (fast war ship), or from the civilation of the Liburnians.
